 Buy the book, "Handmade Electronic Music, by Nicholas Collins, 2009. MAKE SURE IT'S VOLUME 2!. Too many ISBN #s to list. Just make sure it;s the 2nd edition. It will show you many ways to achieve voltage control, opto- compression, envelope follower, pitch tracker, etc. using digital components.
It gives many examples of voltage control with LEDs and light sensitive resistors. Don't know if this will help, but it's loaded with lots of alternative methods of signal processing for low $.
