I like the extremely primitive oscillators in the Gleeman Pentaphonic.

High frequency VCO oscillators feed programmable counters (these 
explain the 5 note polyphony), then 15 each mod-32 counters, 256 byte 
ROM, and 8 bit DAC.

I have to wonder if the designers were idiots (and could only think
of a "naive implementation") or geniuses (no aliasing, gritty timbres, 
voltage control of pitch). 

At any rate, this is surely the reason for both its high initial price
and well-regarded sound.
