I just remember walking to school and back 20 miles up hill both ways in rain and snow.

At least for iron charcoal doesn't work well. To get it hot enough to melt the iron oar you have to put it in blower and it burns up fast. Coke works a lot better. The reason I know this is I know someone that actually went out, dug iron oar and refined it. He ended up with a piece a bit bigger than a US quarter that he keeps on his key chain.
