That is hard to answer without you specifying how much current:
a) your 12V can supply
b) you need to deliver from 5V
There are a number of secondary questions that need answers but these are the two biggies.
In this modern age of low-power circuits, usually a 7805 regulator will do the trick and you have a few packages to choose from for the load you anticipate.
