Sounds like some of you guys should start to take a look
at switching regulators. I have been evaluating them for use with
external hard drives. They now come with internal fets and versions
run at Mhz rates. Short circuit protection with many that you can
short the output and both inductor and IC remain cool to the touch.
Some 18V input, some 24V, some 40V. In the millions of course they
are damn cheap. There are layout guidelines to follow etc. but
these are replacing LDO's more and more.
Some of you may be sensitive to something called EUP lot6.
Here, products in Standby must run at under 1W if no display.
If they have a display they are allowed 2W.

Subject: [sdiy] Question about modular bi-polar power rails
Greets list.
I am in the process of tricking out my WTPA sampler with a yusynth Arp LP
filter clone and was wondering if I can power it with +/- 12 instead of +/-
15. The sampler runs of a 5v regulator and 10V is a lot of voltage to burn
off as heat.
Cheers,
Raph
