Well, as a person whose entire professional situation depends on the world
mining more copper, I would say:  Use 18-gauge!  You can NEVER have enough
copper in your synth! :)

But, on a more serious note, I use MTA-style connectors, exclusively, to
connect panel components to my boards, and the little crimp-on doodads are
sized for 22-gauge wire.  Also, the wires do hold their shape, which is
nice.  The way I conserve wire is to wire as direct a path as possible from
connector to panel component (without introducing any severe bends into the
wire).  I also try to locate the connectors on the board in the same
vicinity as the panel components so I don't have too many wires crossing
paths.
