I use 24 AWG and it seems a reasonable size.  I twist all my wires 
together and that makes the bundle pretty rugged.  I buy 25' spools 
of NTE wire at the local distributor.  I like it quite well and the 
insulation doesn't shrink much with heat although every now and then 
you seem to get a spool that seems to do it a bit more.  The part 
number is WH24-06-25 (06=blue).
