I don't have a recommendation for books with arcane knowledge per se, but
for understanding the basics of transistors without too much pain, it would
be hard to top Malvino, "Electronic Principles" (I use the trusty 3rd
edition from 1984). Once that is digested, then onward to Horowitz and
Hill, "The Art of Electronics" (which can make one feel a little lost if he
hasn't started with an easier text). However, I must confess that
discussions of transistor amplifier biasing make my eyes glaze over,
particularly since I know that I will probably never build a transistor
amplifier!
