Also, you will have to read the manual from that particular manufacturer,
it sometimes happens that the 'spare' pin is doing something different.
Personally, I wouldn't attach anything to a NC pin.

If it is a matter of helping with a layout problem, I would cut the 'spare' 
pin right off.
Hardly good practice, though!
