The book, "We Were Burning" has an excellent chapter on the development 
of the DX-7 and how Yamaha ended up being the compaany to (finally) 
acquire the FM Synthesis patent/IP:

There are many details on the subject which I haven't seen published before.

This is a great book in general about how the Japanese electronics industry
came to be such a powerhouse.
