[sdiy] vinyl stickers for panels

A guy on the eight-oh-eight forum (forum for an 808 clone project) is
selling color printed vinyl with cutouts for the front panel. To
attach them to the metal enclosure simply requires slightly dampening
the surface and then pressing it on.

A local sign shop can print custom vinyl stickers with cutout shapes
for a very low price. These stickers must be a much thinner material
to what the other guy was offering but I am wondering if they could
still be used somehow. For example, could I paint these with varnish
or some other clear coat to make them more wear resistant? In terms of
graphics and precision cutting they are great, the only issue is
durability. Any tips?
