A cheaper and very simple, but possibly "good enough", version could be
built using some 8bit pic, MCP4821, 4051 mux and a bunch of low offset S&H
opamps (LF412 or similar).
The main problems would be limited range (5 oct with 1.5 cent resolution),
not quite reaching the lowest and highest notes exactly and trimming the
output to exact gain (assumes you have high accuracy voltmeter).
It should still beat Paia midi2cv easily.
