[sdiy] Lacquer finish/second thoughts

Well, I had been using an all acrylic top coat, and I have some panels that are about 10 years old.. They are still crystal clear, BUT... they look like I laminated them in plastic.
The lacquer gives a great finish, the way the lights reflect off of it, and the reflections of my knobs on the aluminum lacquered panels is just beautiful! If anyone has DEFT coated panels that are 5+ years old PLEASE chime in here w/ your experience... I'd love to use the lacquer if possible.
In the end, though, I think I'd rather have something that looks good now, and 15 years down the road, rather than something that looks GREAT now, but like a liver damaged alcoholic 10 years down the road.. (I really do not like yellowing!!)(its different on wood where u start w/ a yellowish hue anyway)
Lacquer had been recommended so many times, I thought maybe I was getting conflicting info.. but I guess its just something people accept.. or maybe it's the old timers who made all the pro-lacquer comments, and they haven't ever tried anything else....... (no offence old timers :D I'm in my mid 30s and starting to get set in my ways)

I did a little poking around and the magic compound for "water-white"
lacquer is CAB acrylic (cellulose acetate butyrate). Depending on the
mix, it ranges from "less likely to yellow" to "stays clear".
You seem to be after a protective clear coat. You might want to pop by
an autoparts store and pick up some auto paint clear coat to try. It's
durable and we know it doesn't yellow. Here's what I mean:
