[sdiy] Painting knobs?

So i'm incredibly bored with the fact that 99% of the few well-designed knobs out there that doesn't cost a fortune are black. Does anyone have a good and durable idea on how to make them look interesting? How about spray paint and some kind of varnish, would that work?
