Well, to be fair the MIDI spec does say that the Start message is  
treated by MIDI exactly as you say: an SPP to 0 followed by a Continue.

So far, most of my reading of the spec has been more about absorbing  
and reflecting on each individual sentence, and trying to fit that in  
with the rest of the spec.  Its a bit of a spaghetti tangle at times...
