Yeah, it's useful to read the datasheet carefully sometimes!  In my case 
I have the CS4270 running in standalone mode so as not to use up more 
dsPIC I/O than necessary.  So since this 'feature' can't be turned off, 
I just output a 1 every 8192 samples while the outputs are inactive 
(i.e. outputting 0s).  I don't remember having to do this with the 
CS4272 in the 4xD.

Yeah that looks like an interesting project ... a whole new set of 
tricks to learn!
