As far as dust is concerned, you could always add some sort of "dust
skirt" inside the slider slot. Something made of (non-static?) rubber or
brushes or something that closes around the shaft of the slider to keep
dust from falling into the slider itself. I've seen these on some
hardware out there, although I have no idea what they are called.
