It is funny. I suggest this since years for different gear. It is cheap 
in production and you have a quite well known count of potential 
customers. Imagine a drop in CPU for the TR-808, with additional 
features everyone wants (switch play/write mode without stopping,
copy patterns, copy tracks between patterns, MIDI-control...).

If you build a complete new machine you will have big effort, low 
potential sales count and a low margin. If you build the perfect placein 
upgrade, then you have a much larger count of potential sales and a 
wider profit margin.
