There is a grammar of sorts for MIDI on the net:

But this is written for transmission, and would need significant  
tweaking to be useable in a receiver, partly to make up for omissions  
in what are valid receive bytes (e.g. sysex termination), and partly  
to make it more robust against corrupted or missing bytes.
But its a start.
