If you really need the sharp corner of a "Zener" try to find an npn 
transistor in your stash that has around 3V emitter to basis breakdown 
(you can leave the collector open or if you don't want to check which 
is which just tie emitter and collector).  Your best bet is some 
super-beta or low-voltage RF transistor.  If you've ever used a 
transistor in this way, don't use it in normal mode again unless you 
need a makeshift noise generator, so you should mark it (I'd cut off 
the collector lead).
