[sdiy] electronics library or obsession?

Seeing Dan's book stash has reminded me of something. I was at a used
bookstore in little Jackson, California last week, and found a brilliant
little book:

Active-Filter Cookbook, by Dan Lancaster.

I have been checking out and reading many "university-level" books on
filters from UBC library, trying to make sense of this whole filter issue,
and while they all have their merits, none of them even mentions
voltage-controlled filters. The Lancaster book has a whole section on VCFs,
and even shows exactly how to hook up an OTA to control a state-variable
filter (and why). Heck, he even has a couple of pictures from the old PAiA
catalog! The book is also a whole lot more straightforward regarding the
mathematics behind filters. Really, unless one is majoring in EE, this
brilliant little book is all one needs to understand and design active
filters. All the other books are going straight back to the library!
