As for balanced modulator / ring modulator:
ring modulators are identified by the diode ring. no matter what they
do - they don't have to multiply too well..
multipliers on the other hand have to multiply.
Those are close terms that, if you close your eyes slightly, you won't
be able to tell apart, but they're defined differently. The detail is
big enough to give you audible differences between strict applications
of each technique.
