Really? I'd have thought it was the other way around, since most 
everyone builds balanced modulators, nowadays. Or, do we build 
BalMods simply because we don't want to deal with transformers?

I wouldn't expect the SNR to make much difference in the sidebands 
that are produced, either.

Also, I am of the impression that real ring mods produce more 
distortion, resulting in more pronounced (if less pure) affects -- 
and, consequently, reducing their signal-to-noise ratios.
