oh it's not that bad. some of the PIC functions didn't behave 
themselves and had to be synthesized using external logic, the 
divider chips suggested in the circuits have 100% wrong timing or 
have other unsuitable behaviour, it goes crazy every now and again, 
etc.

it *can* be made to work, but IMHO putting a circuit around an 
Arduino or similar is less effort, can be easily customised, and 
there is plenty of help around.

exactly. design a module that fits *your* needs. with 6 analogue 
inputs and 10 or so digital outputs on even an Arduino, the 
possibilities just for clock misbehaviour are quite extensive.
