Hey guys, thanks for the links and ideas. . . This would be for next year so I have time to mull it all over.
I do use breadboards of course to teach, but I want something the students can build to take home (look ma - electronics rocks!) and something they can practice soldering on. Afterall, whats the point of teaching electronics if they aren't confident enough to take apart and hack their old junk! There are kits availale for this, but they're not really cheap and Id like the kids to be a little more involved. (calculating/picking parts, testing, then soldering)
we're doing hand drawn circuits on foamcore board next. Punching holes with small nails and then soldering parts on. (astable multivibrator dual LED blinky)
we'll see how it goes, might just get protoboard instead of real PCB's.. who knows.. We'll be sending a few future EE's outta here before I'm done!! we need more synth designers!

trying to get my supervisor to spring for a PIC BASIC programming environment and burners for next year's level 2 class - fingers crosssed!
