I later evolved this into my CVS display at 
http://modularsynthesis.com/cvs/cvs2.htm

I left the MIDI monitor code in there.  You just ground a pin and it 
becomes a monitor display.  It's setup for a 2x16 display but at the 
bottom of the page you can see a 2x40 display I did.

John Loffink was selling programmed AVRs with his display PCB.  On 
the CVS page there are schematics for how to modify this PCB for a 
stand-alone MIDI monitor.  They yahoo group is at 
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/ComputerVoltageSources/
