I'm in the process of writing a state machine for processing MIDI note 
on/off messages - see recent messages.

Now that Achim have put me on the right path, I will be correcting this 
in the next couple of days and will post it here.

My state machine is intended to be called by the UART receive interrupt 
of whatever device you are using - it could give you a starting point.
