what would you call it if it just produced a correction CV?

If you want to get rid of the offset on a CV summer, you can provide a
trimmer at some suitable node in the circuit, a DCR in place of the
trimmer, a DAC in place of the trimmer or a (however produced) voltage
at an extra input to the CV summer. Where and why do you stop calling
it trimming when the result is just the same? Any auto-calibration
routine only eliminates the need to measure and correct the offset by
hand and really is an orthogonal issue (to me anyway).
[It would be nice if you'd convince your mailer not to quote
signatures & trailers.]
