OK, I've done a search in online patents databases and couldn't find
the patent for ensoniq's hall sensor stuff..
I think I know why..
Patents only last 20 years total (and that's including the single
possible renewal you can do)
This means we're all free to use hall sensor technology in commercial
keyboards - yay!
So *this* is the secret of how the VAX guys circumvented the Ensoniq
patent... they *didn't*!

Good times, guys.
Expect many expressive keyboards.

Keyboard synthesizers can be musical instruments again.
