I try to use that kind of noise source on my son all the time.

On a related note, my son's first word - clearly used in context, not  
just random sounds that sound like words - is "book." He'll come up to  
my wife or I while we're reading and grab at our book and say "book,"  
and sometimes you'll hear him going "book book book book" and you turn  
around and he's looking at one of his chewable books. Sometimes it  
comes out like "boo," sometimes "ook", sometimes "buh," etc., but it  
is recognizable.

I joked with my wife that he's actually trying to say "Buchla." ;)

P.S. My son said "book" before he said "mama" or "dada" or anything  
else. How cool is that?
