[sdiy] Joystick optical encoders

Hi all

So this talk about joysticks made me do a look around and i noticed that there are joystick optical encoders out there and got curious... has anyone played around with these? What kind of precision are we looking at? How hard would it be to make an analog voltage out for these things, i'm gonna guess it uses something similar to grey code but i didn't really check it out that thoroughly...
