I agree. SRAM gets you up and walking. DRAM can get you running... but
there is more details to be matched. For a first project do SRAM.
SRAM can be had in quite large sizes anyway, so most needs can be
provided with a simple interface. Modern chips may however require
different voltage levels, but first do something with traditional 5V
CMOS chips. DRAM is becomming more and more complex... traditional DRAM
had their challanges, but it was worth it because of the ease to build
larger memory banks. The address multiplexing, RAS and CAS signaling and
timing, the refresh. Not impossible, but for a design done from sratch,
you need to keep track of your timing diagrams. For simple SRAM you can
dabble much more before it doesn't work for you.
