There used to be another standard size - I've 
sometimes seen it called a Wander plug/socket -
which was around 3.2mm or maybe 1/8".  They
used to be used on test gear and you sometimes
find them on the back of old radios, but they're
quite uncommon now.  


They look like a 4mm plug/socket, and the size
is close enough to cause confusion
