[sdiy] german bananas

Well, you live and learn! (said the Dalek to the dustbin) I always
thought that banana was different to (and incompatible with) 4mm, but
having looked up some of the suggested links on this thread, I'm not so
sure!
Certainly, some of my old test gear (and leads to suit) have connectors
which look like 4mm plugs/sockets but they DO NOT fit 4mm sockets/plugs.

I always ASSUMED that this old (1960's or thereabouts) gear used some
imperial dimensioned connector (which I have always known as 'banana')
that had gone obsolete with metrication. I remember in the '70s having
to order either 'banana' or 4mm, so some suppliers used the same
distinction.

Anybody else remember this terminology?

OK, let me ask this another way:

Is it safe to assume that any 4mm laboratory connection that looks like
a banana jack would fit any other? Or are there different specs between
manufacturers (like Hirschmann)?
