Dan,
All You might need is a beginners textbook for digital electronics and
datasheets.
Keywords: electrical bus, (leads to) Address decoding, (Introductory)
Boolean Logic, maybe a bit of De Morgan (for simplifying address
decoding made from normal logic chips), Tri-State (Chips in Hi-Z state
couldn't care less what's going on in the bus), latch.
Using practical circuits as building blocks can lead You to the wrong
way (latches when the chip would only need to be driven Hi-Z, overly
complex address decoding), if You don't understand what's going on,
yet provide simple and clever solutions to problems that look complex
(maybe a bit of logic level switching abuse with RC to get timings
work?).
