I think this is an excellent point.  RAMs are not all the same and are not always
interchangable.  Timing diagrams are a wealth of information as are the specific truth
tables given in the datasheets.  In fact, this statement is true of ICs beyond RAMs and
digital stuff.  Also, many datasheets have what are called test circuits.  I often take a
test circuit and modify it to meet my needs.  Those test circuits reveal a lot of design
how-to clues.
