[sdiy] Tantalums in Yamaha CS20M/CS40M

<<I would replace a tant. with a tant. on the main voice circuits but not in
the power supply, if they are really exchangable (are they?)>>

I would tend to agree with this recommendation. The big difference is the
tantalum has a significantly higher ESR AND I think much tighter tolerances.
If you go swapping them on a voice board you may change the sound. The
circuit may have required a specific capacitance and may be designed on the
additional resistance of the cap ( ESR ) in filter or similar device the
capacitance and resistance defines the frequency response and etc.

In analog Power supplies there is no "Magic" to the caps, and if they happen
to be +50% it usually just means less ripple, take a look at the circuit
though to be sure the ESR is not some esoteric part of the voltage
regulation...

I would replace a tant. with a tant. on the main voice circuits but not in
the power supply, if they are really exchangable (are they?)

I won't bear a short circuit in a power supply caused by a failing tant,
although I still have them crossing the main voltage rails in my refurbished
Prophet 5.... Guess I'll just have to keep recap my synths every 15 years or
so ;)
