[sdiy] OT: gas powered soldering irons?

Derek,
I've just spotted another battery soldering iron at this link
http://www.applefritter.com/node/10572
I think I saw a similar battery soldering iron in Radioshack in Canada when
I was there last year.
I've also found a similar device, but this time by Weller, on eBay. I just
did a search for "Cordless Soldering".
Personally, I've been using Oryx and Portasol gas soldering irons for years,
both for making up connectors in the field (sometimes quite literally) and
occasional PCB work. I find them a nice supplement to my temperature
controlled desktop irons at home as well, especially when I want a bit more
power (mine is equivalent to a 60W iron) without changing bits. I mainly use
mine now as a quick heatgun for heatshrink tubing.
Oh, by the way. This is my first post on the sdiy list, but you can also
find me on the Electro-Music forums quite a lot lately.
Regards
Mike Gorman

Hi Amos,
thanks for the suggestion... I was definitely thinking portable, so no
plans to lug a car battery along on a two day hike or anything. I had a
look at TSA and Euro regulations, anything butane is definitely
prohibited. Might be better to buy the butane iron locally each time.
Not really an ecological approach, is it?
best!
