Well peronally I prefer the 2040 sound over a Moog ladder or the 2044, but 
you can see the 2044 as a way to get a ladder filter without violating 
anybody's rights.
Also I think I remember Dave Rossum said the 2044 was designed to have 
extremely good CV feedthru rejection, allowing the filter to be placed after 
the VCA(s).
