You can ask for an Alodine finish. It provides an hard, oxide like layer
that you can paint on. The stock x0xbox panel is like this. I use a etching
primer before I paint aluminum and it works very well (see my 9090)

Subject: [sdiy] aluminum panel finish types

If I had a 5052 aluminum panel professionally cut, what are some finishing
options I should consider (other than asking for deburring).

Somewhere like Front Panel Express offers the option to anodize but I was
wondering what else is typical to do?

For example, is a doepfer panel simply raw aluminum or has it been coated or
treated with something?

cheers,
Danjel
