Of course mounting to a PCB is the better solution (and I would never mount it on the wing only...)
The mentioned connectors are meant as better TOSLINK connectors as the standard toslink connectors 
Have to carry quite high forces - so an additional fixture is welcome in professional equipment...

If you want a real "panel mount only" solution than this would be fine:

It's a bad idea from the mechanical standpoint to secure connector
with only one screw on plastic as inserting the cable will have just
about the correct force vector to break the plastic mounting point.

Certainly "Good Enough" (TM) for DIY, but having a little PCB with
soldered mounting tap underneath would be better. (Me making a
suggestion that trusting SOLDER to hold something in place with force
applied now and then is a reliable... :P )
