It's not backwards unless the board legend is backward.  I hadn't thought
about cooking the trany but I suspect you might be right.  I was helping a
buddy get into SDIY and after some really simple stuff this was our first
project.  His soldering skills were adequate enough that I wanted him to do
most of the assembly with me supervising.  I wonder if he cooked these when
I wasn't looking!  Unfortunately, I don't have any on hand so I'll order
some and get back in a couple of days.  Thanks for walking through this
circuit, it helped clarify it for me.  Tranys pretty much mystify me.
