Years ago, i sold one on ebay.  Buyer had the same problem.

On the keyboard, the midi channels for the keyboard, and synth, are set 
independantly.  So you can use the unit as a small controller keyboard, 
whilst, at the same time, using the synth over midi.

On the rack version there is a CV out, and, again, you can (IIRC) set the 
midi channel controlling the CV out to be different to that controlling the 
synth.  So, effectivly, you have an independant, although basic, midi>>cv 
converter in the same package.
