It could actually get a little simpler - someone hacked some code to
emulate the MOS 6581 using an Atmega8, and the way it's set up it
requires only one other component to operate, a crystal to provide a
timing signal because the programming process deactivates the internal
clock (which I found out the hard way).
To actually get any sound out of it you still need a battery and a
speaker of some kind, though. :)
