And for the argument's sake:

It's quite questionable, if it's a good engineering practice to use
ASICs to workaround todays problems and let the next generation try to
workaround the unobtainable workaround.

Lets rephrase: I find even fairly restrictive GPL too liberal. Yes,
what the heck does that have to do with anything SDIY? I find it quite
absurd: You can do anything "By the Book", release the modified source
code and forget all about the documentation on which toolchain it's
supposed to compile cleanly and the configuration file that will do
it. Just stick PAL/CPLD there for further obscurification and You're
done.
