Oh, I wouldn't call it 'essential', but as I explained in an earlier email the highest value load resistor you could reasonably put on the 2164 output to stay within the output compliance is around 300 ohms, and then the voltage across that resistor would need significant amplification, adding noise and distortion when there is no need.
So not 'essential', but perhaps 'dumb'.
