I think the data sheet is guaranteeing that the breakdown is "not less than 
6V".
So, there is no saying..
In some ways, using a PIC or similar micro is probably a better way (and 
then
the voltage can go down to +5!)
Although by selecting transistors, you might get a 'non ideal' noise source 
that
is musically preferable. Which is one of the advantages of DIY.
