There was a PC based system from "Lateral Solutions" which seemed
to do a very good job of picking the notes out of a composite
signal and outputting MIDI.  A couple of guitarist friends found 
the demo version (30mS latency) quite impressive.


Unfortunately the developer died suddenly, so it's no longer
available.  Demo versions are out there, but the only way to
get a full version is to get a cracked one.
