[sdiy] OT: help finding free/trial disk repair software

do you remember where the drive was mounted? you can probably guess.

assuming your boot drive is on /dev/disk0, you could try /dev/disk1, 
2 etc until the error messages started going away and the disk 
started showing activity.

these utilities are doing the same thing that fsck would, so don't 
give up on fsck just yet. i had a big firewire drive fail to mount 
just like yours after moving house, fsck brought it back, 
lickety-split.
