No, not in its context, when it was designed back in early 70thies, this
was the way to get improved performance. These days it is much easier to
get an opamp to match the performance, but if you repair one of these
you need to be careful because of this peculiarity.
A design doesn't change just because better components arrive on the scene.
So there is an excuse for such a design and the designers does not have
to excuse themselfs.
